Supervised Visitation v Therapeutic Visitation

When a parent’s ability to safely be around a child is in question it may be appropriate for a court to order supervised visitation. This occurs when the child and the parent engage in contact while a relative or agency observes the interactions to ensure the safety and/or appropriateness of the contact between the parent and child.

Therapeutic visitation occurs when a child and parent engage in counseling sessions with a licensed therapist to work through difficulties that may exist. This could be due to fear from a child, parental alienation issues or a general discord between parent and child. The therapist would then attempt to work through the difficulties between the parent and the child.
