Petit larceny or shoplifting as it is also known is a misdemeanor offense. This means that it can be punished by up to one year in jail for each offense. Petit Larceny is a very serious offense and can carry with it not only a misdemeanor conviction and jail sentence but could be something that will need to be reported on all future job applications, applications to schools and as such affect you for the rest of your life.

Having an attorney is of paramount importance when dealing with a misdemeanor matter such as this. Whether it is your first offense, second or third having an attorney will enable you to appropriately defend yourself.

In addition to being placed in jail for up to a year another possible sentence to the crime of Petit Larceny due to its misdemeanor status is to be placed on probation for three years. This means that an individual could have to report to a probation officer weekly, have probation officers randomly come to their home and have someone supervising their life for a period of three years. Should a term of probation be violated then the Court more than likely would impose a jail sentence term and terminate the probation supervision.

As a rule of thumb don’t commit a Petit Larceny and expect nothing to happen, but if you do or know someone who has make sure they protect themselves by hiring an attorney who knows the court that the matter is pending in.
